AURELIUS has agreed to acquire three European paper mills from Sappi

Divested Operations

Following a strategic review process, Sappi decided to divest its paper and graphic board mills in Kirkniemi, Finland; Maastricht, Netherlands and Stockstadt, Germany. The mills produce publication and graphic paper used in catalogues, brochures and leaflets as well as graphic board paper used in posters, folders and premium packaging. With a combined capacity of more than 1,200 kt/a and revenue of more than €1 billion, the new entity would be one of the leading printing paper manufacturers in the European market.

The Deal

Lincoln International leveraged its global network and extensive pulp and paper sector expertise to support AURELIUS throughout the transaction. Under AURELIUS’ ownership, the group is poised to further optimize its operations and solidify its position as the go-to provider in the European market.

Our Perspective

Svante Adde, Senior Advisor in Lincoln’s London office, commented, “The paper industry is going through a major repositioning. A number of established producers are converting more and more capacity away from printing paper and towards packaging grades. As this trend continues, AURELIUS should be in an excellent position to unlock value and establish an even more profitable business.”

Phillip McCreanor, Managing Director and co-head of Europe, commented, “Sappi’s decision to divest the three mills follows a series of carve-out announcements across a range of industries. Lincoln has been extremely active during this period advising several organizations in their efforts to streamline their operations and divest businesses they no longer see as core to their future growth. In light of the current macroeconomic uncertainty, we expect corporates to continue to reassess their strategic priorities leading to further divestitures.”
